Earlier this week, groups of travelers climbing Yandang Mountain in eastern China were stuck partway up a cliff, clinging to a rope along a fixed climbing route, for more than an hour. Someone like me afraid of heights might just wet myself up there!” wrote one Chinese online commenter. Wenzhou Dingcheng Sports Development Co., Ltd, which manages the via ferrata, said it had underestimated the number of people interested in climbing the mountain. Yandang Mountain is about 410 km (255 miles) south of Shanghai, in Zhejiang province, and is 1150 meters (3,773 feet) high. A popular site for holidaymakers in China, Yandang Mountain was submitted for UNESCO World Heritage site designation in 2001 and remains on the tentative list.

Obtaining high status was likely as easy for men in the Tang Dynasty as for men in the modern US, a study suggests. It found that social mobility for men at the time could be compared to that of the 1960s in the US. AdvertisementMen in medieval China could gain high status in society as easily as male Baby Boomers in the US, according to a new study released on Thursday. Women, however, were unlikely to be part of the Chinese bureaucracy, and few would have taken the imperial exam, Hout said. But I wouldn't see a farmer's kid being able to pass the exam," Hout said.

As recently as 2019, less than one-third of young men said that they faced discrimination, according to Pew, but today, close to half of young men believe they face at least some discrimination. There was not a single issue that young men cared about significantly more than young women. There was not a single issue that young men cared about significantly more than young women. Most young men are probably not interested in making America great again, but they do feel acutely the need to secure a place for themselves in a culture that readily identifies male advantage but ignores the challenges young men face. By Renju JoseSYDNEY (Reuters) - A tropical low in the Coral Sea will likely develop into a cyclone and hit Australia's northeast later this week, the weather bureau said on Tuesday, a month after tropical Cyclone Jasper caused widespread damage across the region. "It is intensifying and will likely reach cyclone strength overnight tonight or during Wednesday ... a coastal crossing is most likely overnight on Thursday," Laura Boekel, forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology, said during a press briefing. Heavy rain will drench regions that are already wet, significantly raising the risk of flash flooding, Boekel said. "This could be a very widespread as well as a very long-duration event," Boekel said. Cyclone Jasper in December left a trail of destruction in Queensland's northern regions, forcing some residents to flee their homes and cutting off towns.

It’s the career track of legends: Lowly executive assistant rises to the top from the desk outside the corner office. But they are going only as far as the safest bets in the junk category, bonds rated BB and B. Junk bond spreads, the additional interest rate investors demand over safe Treasury bonds, tightened sharply. The spreads of those rated BB and B, or the higher rungs of junk, had tightened 47-52 basis points last week, according to Informa Global Markets data. Four junk bond issuers – Bombardier (BBDb.TO), Venture Global LNG, Smyrna Ready Mix Concrete and InfraBuild Australia - announced bond offerings on Monday. School board members refuse to cede any ground. One was a discordant school board meeting in September that stretched over nearly five hours. The other was a school board candidates forum that drew a full room in October. Since then, the school board has hired its own private security to stand guard at meetings. While she does not have proof, Drane thinks it was retaliation for her vocal resistance against the new school board majority.

Trying to maintain a career in Hollywood was "not something that was feasible for me to continue," this person told Insider. Insider spoke with eight current and former assistants at Hollywood companies, plus a former creative executive at a midsize film studio. Many hopefuls can't find jobs in an industry that's been wracked with head count reductions and budget cuts. Netflix's website lists just one open assistant job — a role in a non-creative vertical. At Paramount, which cut 25% of staff from its US cable networks earlier this year, there appear to be no open executive assistant jobs in entertainment capacities .

But numerically the biggest problem ... is the broken rungs," Lean In founder Sheryl Sandberg tells CNBC. The key issue: for every 100 men promoted from entry-level to manager, 87 women, and only 73 women of color, are promoted. And while the promotion rate for Black women to manager rose in 2020 and 2021, last year that rate fell back to 2019 levels. The report debunks four key myths – including that the glass ceiling is the biggest factor holding women back, when it's really the broken rung. "Our data is super, super clear that women are more ambitious, or as ambitious as men, more ambitious than they were before Covid," says Sandberg.

It also introduced metrics tied to first-generation college students and to whether recent graduates were earning more than people who had completed only high school. Occupying the ranking’s middle rungs meant that shifts in methodology, like the removal of alumni giving as a criterion, could easily fuel dramatic rises and falls. Aug 24 (Reuters) - Gap Inc (GPS.N) forecast third-quarter sales below expectations and missed Wall Street estimates for quarterly sales on Thursday, hit by softness in demand as budget-strained American customers cut back their spending on accessories and apparel. The owner of Banana Republic and Athleta brands expects third-quarter net sales to decrease in the low double-digit percentage range, compared with analysts' expectations of a 6.76% decline, according to Refinitiv data. England entered the World Cup knockout stages still waiting to look like the dominant team it had hoped it could be. England had arrived in Australia last month without three of the country’s best players, all ruled out because of serious knee injuries. Another star was hurt in the group stage and missed a game and a half. Then the Lionesses lost their best player at this World Cup, the young midfielder Lauren James, to a suspension after she was sent off for stamping on a Nigerian player in the round of 16. Overcoming an early goal with one of their own just before halftime, the Lionesses delivered the kind of performance they had been saying was just around the corner, beating Colombia, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals for the second straight World Cup.
